Top Takeaways From This Episode

  • Our perceptions create our reality, which means we have the power to shift our reality. This is how we gain Self-sovereignty.
  • The only way to shift our reality is to put ourselves in uncomfortable situations that allow us to learn more about ourselves.
  • The way we see other people is shaped by our own experiences.
  • We do ourselves a big favor when we stop trying to meet other people’s standards
  • Being conscious means listening and paying attention to yourself. This helps us create and maintain good relationships with ourselves.

Cracked Foundations

Kerri Hummingbird spent a significant portion of her childhood in therapy. By the time she was five, Kerri felt insecure and unworthy due to two abusive father figures and a mother who, despite her best intentions, wasn't supporting her properly. Though she learned a lot of valuable tools in therapy, Kerri still felt the aftershocks of her childhood trauma. Sadly, very early on she felt broken and believed she needed to “fix herself.”

Eventually, Kerri discovered the power of energy which lead to self-sovereignty. This was something Kerri wasn't able to access from therapy and it was a whole new world.

Stairway to Heaven

Kerri doesn’t point to an event when she describes her mindset change. Eventually, she sought alternative forms of self-healing. She was no longer willing to let other's decide her truth.

Through alternative therapies such as shamanic healing, she came to understand that the boundaries through which she defined her personhood were more malleable than she ever imagined. “I was not what I thought I was,” she explains. “I realized, ‘I am not one thing. I’m a bunch of energy. I can decide what stays and what goes, I can track it, I can look within, I can find bugs in the software, take it out… All of a sudden I became the programmer of my own consciousness.” She felt empowered when she shifted her focus from healing her “self” to healing her energy body.

Heart of Darkness

The process of healing her energy body included exploring her deepest fears about herself. She entertained and embraced descriptor words that once brought her shame and dread, like “crazy.” Maybe I am crazy, she thought to herself, but that’s okay. She made a concerted effort to let go of other people’s standards and expectations by changing her mindset. Thus began her journey towards self-sovereignty.

The Road to Self-Sovereignty

Though all of these realizations changed her life for the better, Kerri emphasizes that the healing process is an eternal one. “There’s no ‘set it and forget it,’” she says. To keep herself grounded in her own conscious healing process, she “opens sacred space.” To do this, she uses a ritual inspired by the Lakota cosmology of Four Directions that’s meant to bring her mind out of one state of consciousness into another. She also consults the spirits of her ancestors, a practice inspired by American, African, and Asian cosmologies. (A good place to begin your own healing process is through Kerri’s Love Mastery Game, a free program that invites us to explore spiritual healing).
