Top Takeaways From This Episode

  • Death is inevitable. Truly accepting this can enrich your life’s experiences.
  • Talking about practical things brings about deeper questions and conversations.
  • Giving yourself permission to be human is real self-care.

Alua Arthur is a woman with incredible energy. She works as a death doula supporting people through end of life planning and her fierce love of life stems from her respect, acceptance, and reverence towards death. Truly, her story is one unlike any other.

Dark Beginnings

After a decade of practicing law, Alua felt unfulfilled and lost in her own life. Falling into a deep, clinical depression. First, she took a leave of absence and traveled to Cuba. Then, she experienced a true transformation and discovered a universal truth. We are people who are all going to die, eventually. Death is the one thing that’s certain in life, yet we are often afraid to talk about dying!

Becoming a Death Doula

Finally, after a deep realization about what it means to talk about it, Alua began her practice as a death doula. Today, she focuses on what the transition might look like and how to deal with the aftermath. She, beautifully, emphasizes the need for a circle of support throughout the dying process. Therefore, she offers non-medical care and support to the dying and their families. Alua serves everyone from those who are just beginning to think about the dying process to people who are very ill and know their transition is near. Her services cover everything from the logistics of financial planning to grief support after death. Beautifully, this is all-encompassing support and something everyone deeply needs.

Becoming Alua

As she began to effectively provide support and guidance to those in their most vulnerable time, Alua uncovered her truest self. For Alua, embracing death is the only way to truly live. Her infectious energy acts as a beacon for those who call upon her for end-of-life planning and support.

The Brave Files Podcast talks about the importance of death in life with death doula, Alua Arthur.
