Monique Pettaway’s marriage began as most do, she and her husband were in love and planned to build a beautiful life together. Unfortunately, they only enjoyed eight months of happiness. Unexpected tragedy struck less than a year in.
AFTER RETURNING HOME FROM A VACATION, MONIQUE RECEIVED TERRIBLE AND SHOCKING NEWS – – HER HUSBAND WAS WANTED FOR MURDER.
Confusion, disbelief, and worry consumed Monique and her family. Monique and her husband watched in disbelief as the media destroyed his character. Her husband staunchly denied any wrongdoing. Monique firmly believed in his innocence and remained steadfast.
Life in Prison
Ultimately, Monique’s husband was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. He remains incarcerated and continues to fight for justice and freedom, from behind bars.
Sadly, he is a victim of Alabama’s Three Strikes Law. This means his prior convictions (for petty crimes) influenced his immediate case. Year after year, Monique stood by her husband’s side and they continuously appealed to the court.
Eventually, Monique's husband convinced her to file for divorce so that she could move on with her life, without him. However, they remain close friends and she will always continue to fight for his freedom.
UNSURPRISINGLY, MONIQUE FELL INTO A DEEP, ALL-CONSUMING DEPRESSION.
She functioned at a bare minimum and she was broken.
Rededication to Life
Monique finally found hope, with her mother’s encouragement. First, Monique rededicated herself to their church. Then she found a renewed faith in God. Finally, she began to feel whole.
Monique is now a minister to others. She coaches women to overcome their past hurts and trauma and strengthen their lives. Her recently published book, Incarcerated But Free, is a wonderful example of how to break mental prisons and find freedom.
