The Crash That Changed Everything
We never know what the Universe holds for us, but one thing is for sure – If we’re not careful, our lives can be on a collision course towards disaster. This week we meet Carla Moore, a powerhouse executive who’s life was nearly ended during a tragic accident. Surviving a nearly unsurvivable crash not only gave Carla a second chance at life but also paved a new way for clarity and awareness.
Prior to the crash, Carla was uncomfortable with her weight of 350 pounds and had no real sense of purpose. But she was confused. She had followed the path that was set up for her. She went to college and received her MBA, moved away from home, got a good job with HBO – – And here she was at 40-years-old unhealthy and with no inward goals.
When she awoke at the hospital Carla made four promises to herself! She was determined to lose 100 lbs, run a 5K, renew her involvement in community service and outreach and visit Rome! Once she made these declarations, she began to develop a plan to check each item off the list, one by one.
A Promise To Herself – New Goals!
Many of us struggle with achieving goals. Carla created a goal implementation plan that’s easy to follow and actually works! How do we reach our own lofty goals without giving up? Carla says you have to be ready to ” accept no other alternative” and stick to a daily routine.
You start by visualizing your goal and actually seeing the outcome, then you educate yourself and finally, you, do the work! It sounds easy … But we all know it isn’t! Carla reminds us that “Transformation is not for the week.” But it’s totally achievable!
Carla starts each day with gratitude and personal mantras. Then, throughout the day she visualizes and pictures the outcome of her goals. At the beginning of her transformation, she bought a treadmill and started tracking her diet.
Total Transformation
Amazingly, but not surprisingly, within a year Carla reached her weight loss goal, ran a 5k, and took a trip to Italy to see Rome. She also became more involved with her sorority outreach and set up regular donations to the Red Cross.
To Carla’s surprise, there were some wonderful and unexpected results of her personal transformation. She started to notice how things began to flow into other parts of her life. Suddenly, the journey for personal clarity became contagious and her new-found confidence propelled her professional career. Eventually, she began speaking at conferences and leadership seminars then, one day something magical happened – – Carla was approached with a book deal.
Her clever and effective book Crash: Leading Through The Wreckage, Using Personal Transformation to Transform Your Leadership was then born.
Living with Purpose
During this engaging interview, Carla and Heather answer a truly powerful question: As you begin to reach your goals, how do you stay the course? As Carla says before the crash she was “looking straight ahead and not seeing anything.” We must choose to be present and grounded, stand in gratitude, and celebrate our successes. But,”Be enlightened enough to know when you are off track.” You have to learn to remove yourself from temptations and lean on family and friends. “When you get a sense of who you are, and what you're here to do, you move with that force and that power to help create the life that you've imagined”
Fantastic Resources
Two wonderful resources discussed in the episode are Tosha Silver’s book, Outrageous Openness and our host, Heather Vickery’s gratitude journals, Shift your Focus and Grow Grateful. These are excellent resources for helping you stay the course during transformation.
