Top Takeaways From This Episode

  • The most badass thing we can be is who we are.
  • Even though outside factors can help us realize the actions we need to take, it’s up to us to actually take action.
  • It’s natural to want to mimic people we admire, and it might even help your project get off the ground. But it’s important to reassess your plan of action. Ask yourself, “Is this true to who I am?”
  • Every day, it’s our job to take one small step forward. Some days those steps will feel like grand leaps, but it’s because those small steps compounded without us realizing.

Rebel With a Cause

Helen Tremethick is a rebel. No, she isn’t a cigarette-smoking, leather jacket-wearing James Dean type, but she’s still a rebel. She points to high school as the beginning of her rebelliously authentic lifestyle. When a teacher told her she shouldn’t pursue drama, Helen did it anyway. She performed a dark, unconventional monologue in front of the whole school, and she got a standing ovation.

From then on, Helen knew that the most rewarding thing she could do in life is just to be herself. Who she is, she jokes, is “proudly unemployable.” It’s fitting, then, that she runs her own business. Helen’s a Brand Voice Strategist & Business Coach who uses her name as a branding umbrella.

The choice to brand her name is a recent one. Helen worked under a different name until her coach told her that the name was limiting her growth. At first, it was hard for Helen to reckon with the fact that she outgrew the brand she built. But when she shifted from the old name to just “Helen Tremethick,” she says it felt like “coming home to herself.”

Love and Badassery

The idea of “coming home to yourself” informs almost everything Helen does as an entrepreneur. Her community, Love & Badassery, relies on intuition, authenticity, and intentional bravery to help elevate others’ businesses. Above all else, Helen believes in the power of reassessment. Change is authentic and necessary. Businesses might begin on one path and pivot to another, and that’s okay. It’s natural to begin your venture by mimicking the path of someone you admire, but you’ll likely outgrow that approach. When you get to that point, Helen says, it’s crucial to reassess your plan of action. Ask yourself, “Is this true to who I am?” From there, our job is to take one step forward.

Only you can take action, and that can be scary. Helen recommends that you start small. Even the tiniest steps will compound, and you’ll take a giant leap before you know it.

Helen celebrates by sharing her successes with other people.
