  • Pro bono work helped understand what the community needs and fears were and helped overcome those fears
  • We all come from somewhere… Forgetting that is doing a disservice to us as a country

Immersive Immigration Experience

Tahmina Watson was born and raised in the United Kingdom. As a daughter of two immigrants she never considered herself to be an immigrant to the UK, she was always just a British Bengali. Everything changed when she met her future husband and moved to the United States. Decades after watching her parents struggle with the reality of their immigration status, Tahmina gained first-hand experience of life as an immigrant.

Helping Others

With the intention of becoming a barrister, she decided to follow in her father's footsteps and go to law school. Tahmina always knew she wanted to help people, but she couldn't have imagined that pro-bono work would have the most impact. This pro-bono work formed her into the human that she is today and gave her a different perspective on life.

Just Like Dad

Her father immigrated to the UK before she was born and became an immigration lawyer in the UK. Becoming an immigration lawyer was never a dream Tahmina had, although he did inspire her to practice law in the first place.

Becoming an immigration lawyer in the United States is a difficult feat for anybody, and it’s even more challenging when you’re an immigrant yourself. The first-hand experience helped Tahmina realize she was called to the work.

Giving is Good

Tahmina’s favorite charitable organization is a nonprofit that she set up called the Washington Immigrant Defense Network. This network allows them to train lawyers to help in a mass crisis. This has become an incredibly important platform with everything going on in Ukraine. This nonprofit was originally established to help separated parents at the border but has since become a primary way to address the timely crisis where lawyers are so desperately needed in large numbers.

"When unkind words are used to describe people, it gives a license to people who share that mentality to be unkind."
