Top Takeaways From This Episode

  • Your mindset is the key to changing anything.
  • Your relationship with money is just that, a relationship. You must be mindful of how you contribute to this relationship.
  • Sometimes the only way to make meaningful change is to hit rock bottom first.

Head for numbers, heart for spending

Hilary Hendershott is a wealth management badass and a shopaholic at the same time. Hilary never went without; her family lived just above the poverty line growing up. However, Hilary enjoyed the “creature comforts,” and the credit card companies kept footing the bill. One day, while trying to get gas, Hilary realized her bank account was empty, and her credit cards were completely maxed out. She had no money and no access to money. She had to literally leave her fancy car at the gas station.

Good Intentions, Bad Results.

The family business was wealth management, and yet Hilary found herself financially insecure. Described as her “crisis of existence,” it was clear to Hilary personal money management was a skill set that she lacked. Once Hilary acquired the technical skill of having a relationship with money, there was no stopping her. From that moment on, she grew into the wealth management powerhouse she is today.

Rock Bottom

After years of financial insecurity, asking for help from family, and foreclosing on a condo, Hilary knew it was time for things to change. Hitting rock bottom is hard enough; realizing the only way out is to change who you are, makes it even harder. After losing her car and her condo, Hilary moved back home to change every aspect of her life. She finally made the conscious decision to live within her means. Spending the first few years pulling herself out of debt, Hilary learned valuable lessons that she knew would help the world. She took her story and the lessons she learned and decided to leave the world a better place than she found it. That’s when she started Hendershott Wealth Management.

We receive when we give.

Having a healthy relationship with money, like all things, is a psychological mindset. Hilary takes this mindset and applies it to every aspect of her life, from her relationships to raising her kid to how she celebrates. The decision to be transparent is a brave decision and a decision that Hilary makes day in and day out.
