Unapologetically Amy
Amy Stephens is funny, thoughtful, and engaging. She also happens to be a trans woman.
Although this was a process and a journey for Amy, she fully came out in 2017 and began hormone therapy.
Unfortunately, as is the case with so many people, her life was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic. While this has been (and continues to be) a challenging time for everyone, Amy was in the middle of a full life transformation at the time and this “forced shutdown” was extra difficult. Having just started to make friends, as her true self, and exploring her identity, she was suddenly in lockdown and feeling alone once again.
Not a Sad Story
Reconnecting with her comedy and improv friends since lockdown has let up, and rekindled her love for that community has been a life-changer for Amy. The improv community has lovingly supported her throughout her gender journey, something Amy holds near and dear to her heart.
The Journey of Gender
Transitioning in her middle life, according to Amy, is a gift, and not a regret. She sees it as allowing her to live as herself with the added bonus of all her prior experience and wisdom. Of course, she was always a woman, she just hadn’t quite realized it, and even if she did, wasn’t quite safe at the time.
But finally, she has become fully herself, in her 40s. From a hardcore republican and Mormon to transgender comedian. You’ll have to tune in to hear that whole story.
Living Authentically, Changing Dramatically
There are things that Amy mourns. That’s the nature of growth, transformation, and change. We must always give something up to receive new things. But Amy knows that living as herself is necessary for her happiness. The joy and sadness coexist. There’s space for all of Amy’s feelings. Luckily, her ex-wife is supportive and a wonderful ally, even though the divorce. In fact, they still live together with their children.
